Criminal Background Certificate

The Certificate of Criminal Background is a document that aims to inform the absence of a criminal record, presenting the applicant's criminal status up to the date of release of the certificate.

This document can be issued at the level of various instances such as: municipal, state, federal or relative to the country of origin. The certificate is mandatory in several cases, such as:

  • Possessing public tender;

  • Obtaining Brazilian naturalization;

  • Carrying out residence authorization processes (RNM | RNE);

  • Applying for consular visas.

Federal Police (PF) Background Certificate - Federal Level

The Criminal Record Certificate informs the existence of criminal records to the name of a specific person in the computerized systems of the Federal Police.

The certificate is issued free of charge over the Internet and is valid for 90 days.

I am a foreigner and need to issue a certificate of criminal record in Brazil to use abroad or in Brazil. Which procedure should I adopt?

Request the certificate via the internet or through a third party. The apostille or legalization of the document must also be carried out for both foreign documents used in Brazil and for Brazilian documents used abroad.

Minors under the age of 18 cannot be criminally charged, so it is not possible to request a Criminal Record Certificate.

Note: in the case of emancipated minors under 18 years of age, it is also not possible to issue a Criminal Record Certificate.

Do I need consular legalization or an apostille for my criminal record certificate to be accepted abroad?

Most likely, yes. Documents issued in Brazil, to be accepted abroad, must be apostilled or legalized at the consulate, depending on the country where they will be presented.
